Depart Dar es Salaam in the morning for the five to six hour drive south to Nyerere National Park, entering near the Mtemere Gate. An afternoon game drive toward the Rufiji River introduces you to giraffe, buffalo and impala. You set up at a basic riverside camp and enjoy your first bush dinner as night falls.
A morning game drive across the Nyerere floodplains looks for lion, wild dog and large herds of plains game. After lunch and a rest at camp, the afternoon is spent on a Rufiji River boat safari among hippos, crocodiles and elephants at the water edge. Return to camp for a relaxed sundowner and overnight.
Join an armed ranger for a guided walking safari, experiencing the bush on foot and learning to read tracks, plants and birdlife. Back at camp you rest through the midday heat before an afternoon game drive in search of predators and elephants. Enjoy dinner and a final night beside the Rufiji River.
Set off on a long overland transfer westward to Ruaha National Park, watching the country open into rugged baobab landscapes. You break the drive with lunch and rest stops as you cover the distance. Arriving in the late afternoon, you camp near the Great Ruaha River ready for the days ahead.
Spend a full day on game drives through Ruaha vast, remote wilderness. This is superb country for big elephant herds, powerful lion prides and dry-adapted species such as greater kudu among the baobabs. A picnic lunch keeps you out in the field before you return to camp for the evening.
After an early Ruaha game drive you break camp and drive east toward Mikumi National Park, the most accessible big park from the coast. The journey passes through changing scenery with stops along the way. You reach your Mikumi camp in the afternoon and settle in near the Mkata Floodplain.
Explore Mikumi with morning and afternoon game drives across the open Mkata Floodplain, often compared to the Serengeti in miniature. Lions, elephants, zebra, giraffe and buffalo are regularly seen against the grassland and hills. A picnic lunch or camp break sits between drives before a final evening under canvas.
Enjoy a short early game drive in Mikumi before breakfast and packing up camp. You then begin the four to five hour road transfer back to Dar es Salaam, the shortest return leg of the trip. Arriving in the afternoon, the adventure concludes or you are dropped at the airport for your onward journey.
