The four-day budget safari gives you an unhurried taste of Nyerere National Park, southern Tanzania largest protected wilderness on the Rufiji River. Travelling overland from Dar es Salaam and sleeping under canvas, it is designed for adventurous travellers who want more time in the bush without stretching the wallet.
With an extra day you add a guided walking safari alongside an armed ranger to the usual mix of game drives and the famous Rufiji River boat cruise. Expect elephants, hippos, giraffe and the chance of lion and wild dog, all experienced from a relaxed camping base close to the water.
After a morning pickup in Dar es Salaam you travel overland for roughly five to six hours to the Mtemere Gate area of Nyerere National Park. A short game drive introduces you to the park as you make your way to camp. You pitch up at a basic riverside camping site, enjoy a hot dinner prepared by the crew and settle in for your first night in the wild.
Spend a full day exploring the park network of tracks through miombo woodland, palm-fringed channels and the open Rufiji floodplain. Morning and afternoon game drives target lion, giraffe, buffalo and the elusive African wild dog, with a picnic lunch or a return to camp in between. As evening falls you enjoy a relaxed sundowner and dinner back at camp under the stars.
Start with a guided walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger, learning to read tracks, birds and smaller signs of the bush at ground level. Return to camp for brunch and rest through the heat of the day. In the late afternoon you take to the Rufiji River by boat, gliding past hippos, crocodiles and elephants along the banks as the light turns golden.
Rise early for a last game drive to catch predators and plains game while the air is still cool. After breakfast the camp is packed and you leave the park for the overland drive back to Dar es Salaam. You reach the city in the afternoon for the end of the safari or a transfer to the airport.
