This six-day road-based safari links two of southern Tanzania finest parks in one seamless overland journey. Begin in Nyerere National Park on the Rufiji River, combining game drives, a boat safari and a guided walk, before crossing overland to the open plains of Mikumi.
Mikumi National Park and its Mkata Floodplain are often called a mini Serengeti, alive with lions, elephants, zebra, giraffe and buffalo. Reached along the Tanzam highway, this combination offers rich variety and steady wildlife without the need to fly.
Depart Dar es Salaam after breakfast for the scenic road transfer to Nyerere National Park, roughly five to six hours. Arrive at your tented camp near the Rufiji River in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive to get your bearings, watching for giraffe and buffalo before returning at dusk.
Spend the morning on a game drive across the floodplain, searching for lions and the resident wild dogs. After a midday break, board a boat for a relaxed cruise on the Rufiji River. Glide past hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife as the afternoon light warms the water.
Head out early on a guided walking safari with an armed ranger, exploring the bush on foot. Continue to Lake Tagalala and its natural hot springs for a scenic pause. Return with an afternoon game drive, then relax at camp with dinner under the stars.
After breakfast begin the overland drive to Mikumi National Park along the Tanzam highway. Check in at your lodge near the park and take lunch. In the afternoon set out on a game drive across the Mkata Floodplain, where elephants and zebra gather on the open grassland.
Enjoy a full day of game drives across Mikumi, with a morning and afternoon session split by lunch. The Mkata Floodplain often delivers lions, giraffe, buffalo and large herds of zebra and impala. Watch the plains glow at sunset before heading back to your lodge.
Take a short morning game drive as you leave the park behind. Then begin the road transfer back to Dar es Salaam, around four to five hours along the highway. Arrive in the afternoon, where your southern safari comes to an end.
