This fast-paced fly-in safari packs the best of Nyerere National Park into three days, with a scenic light-aircraft hop from Dar es Salaam straight to the heart of Tanzania’s largest park on the Rufiji River.
Combining an unforgettable boat safari with classic game drives, it suits time-short travellers, first-time safari-goers, and those adding a wildlife escape to a Zanzibar beach holiday who still want lions, hippos and elephants without a long overland journey.
Board a light aircraft in Dar es Salaam for the roughly 45-minute flight south to a Nyerere airstrip such as Mtemere or Siwandu. A camp vehicle meets you for a transfer to your tented camp on the Rufiji River, with lunch and time to settle in. An afternoon game drive introduces you to the park's woodlands in search of giraffe, buffalo and impala before sundowners and dinner back at camp.
After an early breakfast, head out on a morning game drive tracking lions, greater kudu and the park's famous African wild dogs. In the afternoon you swap wheels for water on a Rufiji River boat safari, drifting past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles and elephants coming to drink, with fish eagles and colourful waterbirds lining the channels. Return to camp for a riverside dinner under the stars.
Enjoy a final early-morning game drive as the bush comes alive, keeping an eye out for any species missed so far. After brunch at camp, you are transferred to the airstrip for your light-aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam, connecting with onward or international travel.
