A light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam lands at Mtemere or Siwandu airstrip in around forty-five minutes. Your guide transfers you to a luxury tented camp set along the Rufiji River. After settling in, enjoy an afternoon boat safari drifting past hippos and crocodiles, finishing with sundowners as fish eagles call across the water.
Begin at dawn with a morning boat safari along the Rufiji and its network of lakes and side channels. Watch elephants come down to drink and search the banks for basking crocodiles and colourful kingfishers. Return to camp for a long lunch and rest, then head out again by boat as the light softens over the water.
Explore the plains and woodlands by open four-by-four in search of lion prides, giraffe, buffalo and the park's famed African wild dogs. Later, set out on foot with an armed ranger to read tracks, learn about smaller creatures and feel the bush at ground level. Evening returns you to the fireside and dinner beneath the stars.
Enjoy an early game drive or a gentle final boat cruise before breakfast, making the most of the cool morning light. After time to freshen up at camp, transfer to the airstrip for your light-aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam or on to Zanzibar. Your Nyerere safari concludes with connections to your onward journey.
